Nothing but the blood…

Some Christians may think that old hymns are boring, difficult or not relevant to modern day living. I’m in two minds about it. There are some well known hymns that I love, that take me to the heights of worship… How great thou art, Great is thy faithfulness and one of my all time favourites, To God be the glory! On the other hand I have been present (and silently worshiping!) whilst a congregation struggles through a real dirge of a hymn, with a difficult song and uninspiring words.

Surely the aim of any musical worship, regardless of style, should be to lift up the Lord and relay an accurate biblical message?

Nothing but the Blood by Robert Lowry does just that.

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain:
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Now by this I’ll overcome—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Now by this I’ll reach my home—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Glory! Glory! This I sing—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring—
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

NOTHING but the blood of Jesus. Not baptism, not works, not regular Sunday church attendance, not obeying rules or being a “good person”.

It is only by the blood of the Lamb that we are saved.

John 1:29
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Acts 4:12
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Ephesians 1:13-14
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, [14] who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

  1. Exactly! And it keeps the Lord uppermost in our mind as we sing, either in our heads or out loud. 🙂

    Ephesians 5:18-20 NIV
    Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, [19] speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, [20] always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
