Arrow Prayers

As Christians, we often berate ourselves and feel bad about not spending hours in prayer, pleading mournfully over world situations or the needs of people we know. Of course, there are some who are called to be intercessors, who do spend many hours at a time in prayer because God has given them a burden to pray for these things and to keep praying until there is breakthrough. For the majority of us though, we throw up a prayer here and there as we think of something, or see a need, and might expect that God is not very pleased with that. We call these arrow prayers.

Now, remember that the Lord made the physical universe and the laws that govern it… We cannot see light waves as such, but we can see everything else because of them. We cannot see air, but we can feel it when it’s windy. When an arrow is fired, the split second it is released from the bow, the arrowhead has an effect on the air molecules in front of it, pushing them out of the way. Very simply put, as the arrow speeds towards its target, millions of molecules have already been affected and some of the energy that was transferred from the bow into the arrow is transformed into heat from friction, and will be released into the air around it. We wait for the arrow to hit the target, but we do not see the effect it is having on its way there.

Father God does not despise our arrow prayers. Even as we are thinking or speaking them, they are already having an effect in the spiritual realm that is not seen by us in the natural. Sometimes we may never even see whether the target was hit, but we do know we have a loving Father whom we can trust. When we pray, however simply, His ear is inclined towards us and His desire is to bless.

The same power…

Satan must have been laughing all the way to hell when Jesus died on the cross. He thought he’d won, but he’d actually made a massive tactical error. As Obi-Wan Kenobi told the evil Darth Vader in Star Wars, “If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” And Jesus rose from the depths of hell, victorious; alive with resurrection power, restored to his position of honour and authority at God’s right hand.

He promised that those who believe and trust in him will receive power from on high in the form of the Holy Spirit so, in the words of Hillsong, “The same power that conquered the grave lives in me” – lives in us! The SAME POWER! How amazing is that?!! The same power that spoke the universe into being; the same power that commanded the storm to cease; the same power that brought forth life and health in countless afflicted people during Jesus’ ministry… lives in us.

Why then do we, who call ourselves Christians, often act so helpless? ALL our sins were nailed to the cross and taken to the grave with Jesus. By God’s grace we are free and empowered with HIS spirit! We must walk daily in the knowledge of that power and understand that it is available to us at all times, but we need to SPEAK to release it. Jesus spoke and it was made so. If we remain silent we will never change anything!

WWJD?

So, here I am, spending a few days in a cottage at Ashburnham Place in Sussex with a friend. About 12.30am, with said friend fast asleep in bed, I was pottering about and listening to quiet music when I thought I heard knocking! We are on a private gated estate with no lights, extensive woodland all around and in the darkness outside, I realised someone was at the door…

I wasn’t scared actually, but thought it best to act with caution! I put the porch light on and called, “Hello?” through the bolted door. A man’s voice came back, “Hello? I’m booked in to stay here tonight.” I thought, You’re not Mate! And if you think I’m opening this door, you’re very much mistaken!

Anyway, the conversation continued and I realised he’d come to stay at the community up at the main house. He sounded French and there are a lot of young Christians from all over the UK and Europe who volunteer their time to help run this Christian retreat throughout the year. I told him reception was about half a mile up the lane, over the bridge, then follow the signs. He thanked me and left.

So, I then started thinking, I should have offered to drive him, as it really is DARK out here. I worried he might get lost and fall in the lake, or arrive to find all in darkness and end up sleeping on the grass. Poor guy…

So, I prayed for him. It was all that I could do in the circumstances, but I kicked myself for not being braver and bolder and having the courage of my convictions to help a lost stranger.

What would you have done? And, I wonder, what would Jesus have done?

It’s that simple…

Thought for the week from April 2014

I was pondering how to tell people, and especially young people, about Jesus in a way that they can relate to. We often tell non-believers, “Jesus DIED for YOU – even if you were the last person left on the planet he would still have died for you!” – and we expect them to understand!

Whilst Jesus did indeed die for us all, I’m not sure that the average person these days can see the relevance of a man who claimed to be God, but was tortured to death 2000 years ago! Instead, I felt the Lord was saying, “Don’t tell them I died for them, tell them I am alive and I LIVE for THEM now!” People need to meet the person of Jesus first – the understanding of the why and how of the Gospel message will come later.

The modern world is instant – people can Tweet, post pictures and messages to numerous social media websites, text, e-mail, instant message or phone. Worldwide news is available 24 hours a day and information can be found on almost any subject with just a few keystrokes, so this is how I might explain Him now, in a nutshell of course, using a more Facebook-like analogy!

Jesus has an eternal time-line, endless in each direction, with His years on Earth somewhere in the middle. He’s not on Earth now, but we can chat with Him using personal messaging and He often gives us encouragement, help and comfort during these conversations. He puts up pictures of where He’s been and where He is now, so we know what it’s like there, and He posts important messages on His wall that are available for everyone to see. We are His friends and we are connected to all the other people who are also His friends. One day, He will de-activate His account and gather all His friends up to be with Him in person, and we will, as they say, all live happily ever after!

Of course, sharing the good news is not really that simple… Or is it?

The joy of the Lord…

I visited a nursing home today to see a relative. It was 34°C on my car thermometer and, in the home, there was a bit of a party going on for one of the carers, who was leaving. It was very warm and humid and the staff looked somewhat tired and bedraggled. As the entertainer worked her way through a number of well known musical favourites, one particular member of staff stood out. Smiling and laughing, she sang the choruses at the top of her lungs as she whisked various elderly people to their feet for a dance – and they absolutely loved it!

I marvelled at how much energy she still had, even though she was almost at the end of what would likely have been an 8-10 hour shift. The rest of us were wilting severely, though not nearly so active, and huffing and sighing as we mopped our perspiring brows! Her joy was making a noticeable difference to the people she cared for, as well as sustaining her through a physically and emotionally demanding day.

I don’t know if this wonderful lady was a Christian, but I was reminded that “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)

What is the joy of the Lord and why is it our strength?

Hebrews 12:2 For the joy that was set before him, he endured the cross.

The joy that was set before Jesus was the restoration of the personal relationship between God and man; right back to the beginning, when Adam and Eve walked and talked with God in the garden and did not have sin in their lives. Jesus was going to reverse the curse and make righteous all who would believe in his death and resurrection, turn away from their old lives and turn back to God. The veil has been torn and we have a new and living way to come into the Holy of Holies. His name is Jesus!

His joy at enabling this is our strength because, by his sacrifice, we have been made righteous and restored as heirs to the kingdom.

Do you wait…?

Do you wait for the blast of the trumpet?

Do you long for the sound of His voice?

Do you see that your Hope’s drawing nearer?

Stand up! Lift your head and rejoice!

For the Bridegroom is coming; be ready!

He comes for his pure, spotless bride;

To sweep her up in His loving embrace,

In those arms that were once stretched out wide,

As the sins of us all weighed upon Him

Till the payment for justice was met.

Lift your eyes, for He comes, The Belovèd.

To gather from Earth the Elect.

The world is looking for a hero…

The world is looking for a hero and not just any hero, but a SUPERhero! One who will stand up for the weak, be a friend to those in need and vanquish all our enemies. He has to be able to save the world in spectacular fashion! There’s Batman, Superman, Spiderman… But none are greater than GOD-MAN!

This is the superhero that calms the storm, turns water into wine, heals the sick, raises the dead… NOTHING is impossible for him; he speaks and it is made so. They tried to kill him but he came back from the dead – even the grave could not hold him! We are always safe with him because he is the genuine article, the one who is greater than all the other superheroes and always by our side.

When we stand up and say “Don’t look at me – I’m with HIM! HE is my refuge; HE is my strength; HE is my healer; HE is my provider!” then He is! From the very first time we ask him into our lives and situations, he’s right there and says he will never leave us from that day forward. That’s my kind of superhero… How about you?

Giving all for him…

Giving all for Him… can it be that hard? He gave His all for me. In that silent place of suffering, alone and in more pain that it is possible to describe. Can I give my all for Him? And, if not, why not? Isn’t that what friends and loved ones do for one another – give sacrificially – at some point in their lives?

My sacrifice will not hurt me the way His hurt Him. I will not have to endure brutal beatings, false conviction and hanging from a cross until I’m dead. My sacrifice will be small by comparison, but still I’m struggling. It takes courage to abandon one’s security – and I’m not that brave! Yet, if Jesus stood before me now, in the flesh, holding out His hand and saying, “Come!”, I would go without hesitation, wherever He wanted to lead me.

When we become Christians, we learn to “talk the talk”, but it gets more difficult as we set out to “walk the walk”. Jesus requires that we make sacrifices along the way – perhaps of our time, our money, our leisure pursuits, our family… Can the cost to us ever be too great to continue following Jesus? If we were to ask Him what He requires of us, He would say, “Everything.” But He gave His all for us – surely He is worthy of nothing less?

The greatest story ever told… (the edited version!)

Almighty God came down to earth,

Took human form by virgin birth.

Escaped to Egypt, saved from death,

Then made his home in Nazareth.

Grew up in his family’s love

But knew he came from heaven above.

A grown man then, he was baptised –

God’s rescue plan already devised.

Into the wilderness he went

For forty days without relent.

Returned in power, spirit filled,

Acting as the Father willed.

Chose the twelve, began to preach,

To heal, deliver, feed and teach,

But met with trouble along the way

From religious leaders of the day.

Prepared for what he knew was coming –

A friend’s betrayal; horrific suffering;

Beatings, trial and false conviction;

Condemned to death by crucifixion.

Breathed his last, his work all done –

The victory over Satan won.

His friends in sorrow and dismay

Did not know what took place that day,

Until they saw that he was risen,

Restored to life from deathly prison.

Sent his disciples into the world

As the way to salvation was unfurled.

Returned to heaven, but all was not lost –

His Spirit came back at Pentecost.

Empowered his followers that they should not lack,

But continue their mission until he comes back.
